Ferguson Estate
A red wine from Washington State that shows what basalt rock and consistent craftsmanship can extract from a single vineyard. The Ferguson Estate from L'Ecole N° 41 stands for the ripeness of the Walla Walla Valley AVA – structured, profound, age-worthy.
L'Ecole N° 41 is one of the pioneers of the Walla Walla Valley. The winery was founded in 1983 in a historic school building and manages the 42-hectare Ferguson Vineyard sustainably. The vines are rooted in 15-million-year-old basalt rock – an unusual terroir that gives the wine a distinct mineral tension.
In the glass, the Ferguson Estate shows dark berry fruit – blackberry and cassis – with notes of cedar wood and graphite. The acidity structure is precise, the tannins dense but not coarse, the finish long and spicy. A wine with backbone that can handle a few more years of development.
- Food: Grilled ribeye, leg of lamb with rosemary, ripe cheddar
- Temperature: 17–18 °C

L’Ecole N° 41
The winery is located in the Shenandoah… uh, sorry – in the Walla Walla appellation area, where the soil is rather dry, sandy, and basaltic. The location gives the wines a fresh, clear fruitiness. It was founded in 1983 by Jean and Baker Ferguson as a retirement project. Style of the wines: They make rather elegant, accessible red and white wines with a fine tannin structure. Typical are juicy fruit, clean extract, and an increased balance between freshness and ripeness. Red wines are dominant – Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot – often with a regional touch.
Wine philosophy: Craftsmanship in the foreground, sustainable practices, and clever wood aging so that the characters of the grapes are not drowned out. L'École No 41 gives you wines with character, elegance, and a certain accessibility. No loud showbiz, but down-to-earthness with passion.
In short: L'École No 41 is a charming, down-to-earth winery from Washington with French flair that delivers honest, well-made wines that are fun, carried by balance and clarity. Cheers!
