Enkircher Steffensberg Riesling Old Vines Own Root

Own-rooted vines in Steffensberg — that means: no grafting onto American rootstocks; the vines have stood on their own roots in the slate soil of the Middle Moselle for decades. This piece of vineyard history is one of the rarities still preserved by Villa Huesgen in Enkirch.

The Villa Huesgen winery has been rooted in Enkirch, one of the underrated Riesling villages of the Middle Moselle, for generations. The Steffensberg vineyard is among the best sites in the village: blue slate, steep exposure, plenty of warmth — ideal conditions for Riesling with depth and vibrancy.

In the glass, ripe yellow fruit is evident: apricot, mirabelle plum, and juicy white peach. Aromatic herbs and a hint of candied citrus peel accompany these aromas. On the palate, it is dense yet vibrant—the acidity supports the fruit without being harsh, and a salty, mineral finish lingers long in the mouth. This is not a wine for quick drinking.

Serving suggestion: Pairs well with pike-perch on a bed of vegetables, chicken with lemon and thyme, or a mature Munster wine. Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Drinking window until 2030+.

Villa Huesgen

Villa Huesgen embodies something that can still be truly felt on the Moselle: deep roots and a genuine passion for great Riesling. The Huesgen family has been making wine since 1735 – today in its eighth generation, led by Adolph Huesgen VIII.

At the heart of it all is the magnificent villa dating back to 1904, an Art Nouveau gem located right at the center of the vineyard. Here, history and the present merge into a philosophy that sees tradition not as a burden, but as a driving force. The wines are refined, modern, and unmistakably Moselle – made by happy people , as they say on the estate.
