Enkircher Steffensberg Riesling Old Vines Own Root

Own-rooted vines in the Steffensberg — that means: no grafting onto American rootstocks, the vines have been standing on their own feet in the slate soil of the Middle Mosel for decades. This piece of vineyard history belongs to the rarities that Villa Huesgen in Enkirch still preserves.

The Villa Huesgen winery has been rooted for generations in Enkirch, one of the underrated Riesling villages on the Middle Mosel. The Steffensberg is one of the best sites in the village: blue slate, steep exposure, plenty of heat — ideal conditions for Riesling with depth and tension.

In the glass, ripe yellow fruit appears: apricot, mirabelle, juicy white peach. Plus aromatic herbs and a hint of candied citrus zest. On the palate, dense and yet lively — the acidity carries the fruit without stinging, and a salty, mineral finish stretches long through the mouth. Not a wine for quick drinking.

Serving recommendation: Good with zander on a bed of vegetables, chicken with lemon and thyme, or a ripe Munster. Serving temperature 10–12 °C.
