Catena Birth of Cabernet

The Birth of Cabernet from Catena Zapata is a red wine that shows why Mendoza counts among the most significant Cabernet sites in the world – concentrated, structured, and with genuine aging potential.

Catena Zapata is considered a pioneer of Argentine quality viticulture. The family winery cultivates high-altitude vines in the Andes – partly at over 1,000 meters – and combines European cellar tradition with the unique terroir of Mendoza. The 2021 vintage brought ideal conditions for red varieties: even ripening, moderate sugar content, balanced acidity.

In the glass, the wine shows deep ruby red. In the nose, black currant, blackberry, and a hint of cedar wood, underscored by subtle notes of dark chocolate and tobacco. On the palate, dense but well-integrated tannins, lively acidity, and a long, spicy finish with a touch of graphite.

Drinking recommendation: Served at 17–18 °C. Pairs with beef fillet, aged Manchego, or braised rack of lamb. Now with some decanting time or at its peak from 2026.

Catena Zapata

Catena Zapata stands for a history deeply rooted in the Andes. Nicolás Catena Zapata was one of the first to bring Argentine Malbec to the world stage – not with volume, but with conviction and patience. The vineyards are located in Mendoza, some at an altitude of over 1,500 meters.

Where the air is thin and the sun is intense, grapes ripen slowly and develop a depth that you can feel immediately in the glass: dark berries, a hint of violets, velvety warmth – and always that elegant freshness that high-altitude sites bring with them. Today, daughter Laura runs the winery with scientific ambition and true passion.

She researches which old grape varieties and soils of Argentina are still slumbering – and brings the result into the bottle. You can taste it: wines with character, attitude, and a story worth telling.
