Today, his daughter Laura runs the winery with scientific ambition and genuine passion. Catena Zapata didn't invent Argentinian Malbec – but he played a crucial role in making it a wine the world takes seriously. In the 1980s, Nicolás Catena Zapata began moving vineyards to ever higher altitudes, high into the foothills of the Andes in Mendoza . At 1,200 to over 1,500 meters, the grapes ripen more slowly, the temperature fluctuations between day and night are extreme – and this is precisely what creates wines with a freshness and precision rarely expected from warm wine regions.

Today, daughter Laura Catena runs the winery with the same ambition, but with an added scientific perspective: she maps old vine clones, studies forgotten soils, and collaborates with researchers to understand what Argentina's terroir is truly capable of. The result is wines that not only display fruit but also origin – dark berries, a hint of violet, a velvety texture, and a cool minerality that reveals the altitude.
