From family business to the Straight collection: Tobias Krämer in Gau-Weinheim
The Krämer winery is located in Gau-Weinheim, a small village at the southeastern foothills of the Wißberg in Rheinhessen. It all began as a classic family business under Hans-Bernhard Krämer. His son Tobias first completed a winemaker apprenticeship, then studied oenology in Geisenheim, and subsequently joined the winery alongside his father — before finally taking it over. Since 2013, he has shaped the winery's direction with his own collection, thereby earning a clear place for himself in the German wine scene.
Straightforward from vineyard to bottle
Tobias Krämer lets his work speak for itself — the motto is: no long-winded philosophizing, but consistent craftsmanship from the vine row to the bottling. In the vineyard, this means careful hand-picking and strict selection. In the cellar, the grapes are processed gently: after a period of skin contact, some of the wines undergo spontaneous fermentation in stainless steel tanks, while another portion matures in wooden barrels — depending on the grape variety and the desired style. The use of wooden barrels serves not to reshape the wine, but to sharpen its character.
The approximately 20 hectares of vineyards are spread across sites around the Wißberg, whose soils consist of limestone and clay — with comparatively steep plots by Rheinhessen standards. A special feature is the Uffhofener La Roche site with its red sandstone soil, which provides an independent, mineral, and juicy character. As a member of Generation Riesling, Tobias Krämer is committed to a modern, quality-oriented wine culture in Germany.
Varietal, mineral, without detours
The name "Straight" says it all: the wines reflect the grape variety and origin without inserting any effects in between. The Riesling from limestone shows peach, citrus, and a herbal freshness; the Chardonnay combines bright fruit with a nutty texture from the partial wood aging; the Pinot Gris comes across as creamy and yellow-fruited, the Sauvignon Blanc as vegetal-fresh with a citrus line. The range is complemented by the more relaxed Pudelwohl line — a dry white wine and a rosé made for uncomplicated everyday enjoyment. The overall picture: a winery that translates Rheinhessen limestone into clear, accessible wines with artisanal precision.
