Grapes have been cultivated here on the banks of the Saale River since 1138, first by monks, and today by the state winery, which continues their work with the same dedication. The vineyards around Pforta are exceptional: far north, at the 51st parallel, where summers are short and intense. Since 1138, grapes have been growing on the Saale – first cultivated by Cistercian monks, today continued by the state winery Kloster Pforta with the same care. The vineyards around Pforta are located on the 51st parallel, far in the north of German viticulture. Short, intense summers shape the rhythm of the vines here and give the wines their unmistakable tension: clear fruit, lively acidity, a mineral freshness that reflects the landscape in the very first sip.
The Saalhäuser steep slopes in particular provide Riesling with a precision that one would sooner expect from the Mosel or Nahe. Pinot Blanc from old vines shows how much depth this region has to offer if you give it the time. The winemakers know their soils exactly and work without haste – the result is wines that surprise because they come from an area that many wine lovers have yet to discover.
