Pforta Monastery is one of the oldest winegrowing estates in Germany. Vines have been growing here since 1138 – initially cultivated by Cistercian monks, and today by the state winery, which continues this work with the same high standards. The vineyards around Bad Kösen lie at the 51st parallel, far to the north, where short, intense summers demand an unusual concentration from the grapes.

The Saale-Unstrut wine region is one of Germany's smallest wine regions – and one of the least known. This is precisely what makes Kloster Pforta's wines so interesting: no template, no mainstream style. Riesling from the steep slopes of Saalhausen displays clear fruit and a mineral freshness that comes directly from the limestone-slate soil.
