Müller Thurgau has a hard time in Germany — wrongly so. This one shows what the grape variety can achieve in the right hands: fresh, aromatic, uncomplicated to drink.

Kloster Pforta is one of the oldest wineries in the Saale-Unstrut region. The Cistercian monastery near Naumburg was already growing vines in the 12th century — today the state winery cultivates around 30 hectares on the steep southern slopes of the Saale valley. The climate is continental and dry, the soils of shell limestone and variegated sandstone characterize the wines with a characteristic minerality.

In the glass, the Heimat shows a pale yellow color with greenish reflections. On the nose, green apple, some nutmeg, and a hint of elderflower. On the palate, light-bodied with lively acidity, subtle residual sweetness, and a short, fresh finish.

Kloster Pforta

Kloster Pforta – behind this name lies one of the oldest wine histories in Germany. Since 1138, grapes have been growing here on the Saale, first under monks, today under the state winery, which continues their work with the same seriousness. The sites around Pforta are extraordinary: far in the north, on the 51st parallel, where the summers are short and intense. That is exactly what gives the wines their character – clear fruit, lively acidity, a mineral freshness that you recognize immediately.

Whether a Riesling from the Saalhäuser steep slopes or a Pinot Blanc from old vines: Here you can taste what this landscape has to offer. Almost 900 years of experience sound like tradition – and that is also inside. But Kloster Pforta looks ahead.

The winemakers know their soils inside out and give the grapes the time they need. The result is wines that can surprise you, precisely because they come from a region that many still have to discover.
