The roots of Coppola wine go back further than the first bottle with the famous name. Even Francis Ford Coppola's grandfather Agostino bottled wine for the family in the cellar of his New York home during Prohibition – a tradition that accompanied the director his entire life. With the proceeds from the box-office hit "The Godfather," Coppola purchased a portion of the historic Inglenook estate in Rutherford, Napa Valley, in 1975 – one of the oldest and most renowned wineries in California, founded in 1879 by the Finnish captain Gustave Niebaum. There, he began producing small quantities of wine for friends and family. From these beginnings, the first vintage of Rubicon was created in 1978, which became the flagship of the Napa project. In 2006, the family expanded their wine ambition to Sonoma County and bought the historic Chateau Souverain estate in Geyserville – since then the location of the Francis Ford Coppola Winery, which he himself described as his "wine wonderland."
