Artist and winemaker on the hillside above Florence
Bibi Graetz grew up at the Castello di Vincigliata above Florence — an estate that his father, the South African artist Teddy Graetz, acquired in the 1960s. When Bibi began to cultivate the old vineyards around the Castello again in the early 2000s, it was not a calculated career move, but a return to a place. The vines on these terraces above Fiesole are partly over 100 years old — Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Colorino, and other autochthonous varieties that hardly anyone else grows in modern Tuscany.
His most famous wine, the Testamatta, was produced in 2000 as the first vintage and made Bibi Graetz internationally known within a few years. The name — Tuscan dialect for "crazy head" — fits the approach: no compromises on yield reduction, long maceration times, aging in large wooden barrels. The result is wines with depth and structure that clearly depict the terroir of the hills around Florence without being tailored to international taste.
In addition to the Testamatta, the range includes the lighter Casamatta as well as Colore, a cuvée from the oldest plots. Those looking for Tuscan wines off the well-known denominations — artisanal, site-focused, with a recognizable signature — will find one of the most idiosyncratic producers in the region in Bibi Graetz.
