Wild Rock Pinot Noir

A Pinot Noir from Marlborough that shows what New Zealand's South Island can do with this grape variety: accessible, fruit-forward, and with a clear mineral line on the finish.

Behind Wild Rock is winemaker Steve Smith, who uses his Wild Rock Wine Company to craft wines from the best New Zealand regions — Hawkes Bay, Martinborough, and Marlborough. The goal is clearly defined: to bring the diverse terroir of these islands into the bottle, sustainably and with respect for the landscape. The elaborately designed labels are inspired by drawings of flora and fauna from the expedition of Captain Cook and Sir Joseph Banks (1769) — nature as a program, not just a backdrop.

In the glass, the Pinot Noir shows a fine nose of black cherry and violets, typical for the cooler sites of Marlborough. On the palate, it is carried by a sweet, ripe fruitiness; the body remains medium-weight and the tannins are soft enough to make the wine accessible without a long wait. The finish brings a subtle minerality into play, which gives the wine length and contour.

Best served at 14–16 °C. Pairs with grilled salmon, duck breast with cherry sauce, or a ripe goat cheese. An uncomplicated companion for everyday life that still shows character.
