Röttgen Riesling GG Magnum

The Röttgen vineyard is one of the great single vineyards of the Terrassenmosel – and Heymann-Löwenstein is the winery that has been giving this site its distinctive character for decades. In the magnum, this Riesling matures more slowly and deeply than in the standard bottle.

Reinhard Löwenstein has been cultivating his steep slopes at Winninger Uhlen and Röttgen according to consistently organic principles since the 1980s. The Röttgen vineyard sits on grey Devonian slate – a soil that gives the wine its characteristically cool, stony tension, unmistakable from any other vineyard. The Grand Cru is spontaneously fermented and aged on the lees for an extended period.

On the nose, this Riesling displays a delicate blend of apple pie, yeasty aromas, and fresh slate minerality – as if a bakery were perched atop a quarry. On the palate, it is lean yet firmly structured: crisp acidity, subtle extract sweetness in the background, and rendered butter adding depth. The finish is long and mineral, lingering with delicate pastry notes.

Serving temperature: 10–12 °C. Drinking window: good until 2032 and beyond. The magnum requires some patience – anyone opening it now should decant.
Recommendation: Pike-perch fillet on leek vegetables, scallops with butter sauce or mature mountain cheese.
