Winningen UHLEN "Roth Lay" Riesling dry GG

The Uhlen Roth Lay is one of the great steep-slope references of the Mosel — and Heymann-Löwenstein is the winery that interprets this site more consistently than almost anyone else.

Reinhard Löwenstein has been cultivating the steep slate terraces around Winningen on the Lower Mosel since the 1980s. The Uhlen is not a uniform site, but an ensemble of geologically clearly separated zones: The Roth Lay stands for red, Devonian-era clay slate — a soil that gives the Riesling a different minerality than the blue or brown slate of the neighboring zones. Spontaneous fermentation, aging in large wooden barrels, long lees aging — the vinification here follows classic principles without compromise.

In the glass, citrus zest and ripe yellow pear appear first, then quince paste, a hint of white pepper, and a concise smoky note come into play. The acidity is dense and sinewy, not aggressive — it runs like a red thread through the long, salty finish. The wine often appears closed when young and opens up with years in the cellar.
