Marqués de Cáceres Crianza Rioja

The Marqués de Cáceres Crianza is made from grapes grown on 15 to 25-year-old vines in Rioja Alta (85%) and Rioja Alavesa (15%). The yield is 40 hectoliters per hectare. The soils are mainly calcareous and clayey, some of which have an iron-rich subsoil. The climate of the area is temperate and influenced by the Atlantic.

Fermentation begins at 10°C until the temperature reaches around 28°C. Maceration takes place with the skins over a period of 20 days, followed by fermentation in stainless steel tanks. The wine is then transferred to barrels.

Aging takes place in wooden barrels made of French (60%) and American (40%) oak. One quarter of the barrels are new, 2, 3, or up to 4 years old.

This leads to wines of first-class quality - and at the best price/enjoyment ratio.

The Marqués de Cáceres Crianza is deep red, with a nose reminiscent of red fruits, the freshness of which is complemented by vanilla aromas. In the mouth, the ripe tannins create an impression of joy and freedom. The structure is fleshy, balanced, tasty, and harmonious.

How does the Marqués de Cáceres Crianza 2022 taste?

Deep red Rioja with aromas of red fruits and vanilla — the latter comes from aging in French and American oak. The tannins are ripe and round, the structure fleshy and balanced. Not an edgy young wine, but a harmonious all-rounder.

Is the Crianza dry?

Yes, completely dry. The residual sweetness is minimal; the fruit appears softer than sweet due to the ripe tannins and wood aging.

What does it pair with at the table?

Classic with lamb, game, and veal — but also with grilled and braised dishes. For those who prefer something simpler: Chorizo, Manchego, or tapas work just as well.

At what temperature should I serve it?

Best between 16 and 18 °C. If it is too warm, it loses freshness; if it is too cold, the tannins seem harsher. Put it in the fridge for a short while if the bottle is at room temperature.

How long can I store it?

Thanks to its aging in wood — barrels made of French (60%) and American (40%) oak, one to four years old — the Crianza is already well-integrated and suitable for everyday enjoyment. Cool, dark storage at a constant temperature will keep it stable.

What is the story behind the aging process?

20 days of skin contact provide color and structure, after which the wine matures in oak barrels of varying ages — one quarter new, the rest two to four years old. This interplay explains the vanilla note without the dominance of wood.

Marqués de Cáceres

Marqués de Cáceres is one of the most influential bodegas in Rioja – founded in 1970 by Enrique Forner in Cenicero, Rioja Alta, and shaped from the beginning by Bordeaux pioneer Émile Peynaud. Forner broke with the conventions of his time: shorter wood aging, French instead of American oak barrels, more fruit in the glass.

Since 2007, Cristina Forner has led the family winery as president – and continues this standard with conviction. Today, the bodega controls around 1,200 hectares of vineyards and ships its wines to over 130 countries, without losing the style that made it great.
