Rattlerin Rotgipfler

Rotgipfler – anyone who doesn't yet know this grape variety is missing out. And Weingut Krug from Gumpoldskirchen in the Thermenregion is the perfect place to remedy that. The Krug family are among the guardians of this indigenous Austrian variety, which is hardly cultivated outside the Thermenregion – and the Ried Rasslerin vineyard is their best site for it: heavy brown earth soils interspersed with limestone, perfect for the full-bodied, spicy character of Rotgipfler.

The grapes are hand-picked, gently processed, and aged in stainless steel – with minimal oak influence to preserve the varietal character. The result is a wine that showcases Gumpoldskirchen as it should be.

A rich golden yellow in the glass. The nose opens with a spicy abundance of fruit, quince, yellow apple, a hint of marzipan, and a delicate smokiness. On the palate, it is round and velvety, with piquant herbal spice, a touch of exotic fruit, and a long, lingering finish with pink grapefruit.

Served at 10–12 °C with an alcohol content of 14.0% ABV, this wine has a aging potential until 2030. An ideal accompaniment to Wiener Schnitzel, fried carp, and strong mountain cheese – and a wine that provides a good reason to rediscover Gumpoldskirchen.

Krug Winery

Krug Winery – Gumpoldskirchen since 1746. In 1998, a modern winery was built right in the heart of the vineyards. 35 hectares in the best locations of the Thermenregion, sustainable viticulture, rigorous selection. The soils of clay and limestone – already appreciated by the ancient Romans. Here grow Rotgipfler and Zierfandler, powerful, complex white wines, but also red wines with aging potential. And the aim: to offer exceptional drinking pleasure even in their youth. Varietal winners, gold, silver – the Krug Winery is a true goldmine. Austria's Burgundy, as it tastes.
