Halenberg Riesling GG

The Halenberg vineyard is one of the great Riesling sites of the Nahe region — and Emrich-Schönleber has been among the wineries that consistently prove this for decades. This Grosses Gewächs (Grand Cru) shows why.

The winery from Monzingen has been cultivating the Halenberg vineyard for generations. The site lies on weathered slate and volcanic rock — a soil that gives the Riesling that characteristic tension between fruit and minerality that makes the wine instantly recognizable.

The nose is cool and salty, with stone fruit in the background. On the palate, this is further enhanced: clear apple fruit, a hint of apricot and fresh herbs, underpinned by a dense, salty pressure that permeates the entire palate. The body is firm, the structure fine and precise—not opulence, but tension. A slight astringency gives the wine definition, the finish is long, salty-mineral with a herbal aftertaste. Complex, but never heavy.

The drinking window is wide: already very enjoyable now, with potential well into the 2030s. Serving temperature 10–12 °C. Pairs well with pike-perch fillet with beurre blanc, aged goat cheese, or a classic Wiener Schnitzel with lemon.

Emrich-Schönleber

Emrich-Schönleber is one of the names you should know if you truly want to understand Riesling. The family winery of Werner and Frank Schönleber is located on the Nahe River – a region often overshadowed by the Mosel and Rheingau, but one that boasts vineyards of exceptional quality. Their Grand Cru wines from the Halenberg and Auf der Ley vineyards regularly set new standards: mineral, precise, with an aging potential spanning decades.
