Guado al Tasso Cont'Ugo Bolgheri DOC

Cont'Ugo is the more accessible brother in the Guado al Tasso portfolio — a single-varietal Merlot from Bolgheri that brings the warmth of the Tuscan Maremma coast directly into the glass. Juicy, structured, without the heaviness of some southern Tuscan red wines.

Guado al Tasso belongs to the Antinori family and is located in the heart of the Bolgheri DOC, between the coastal strip and the hills of Castagneto Carducci. The maritime breeze of the Tyrrhenian Sea ensures long ripening periods and preserves acidity — crucial for the wine's vibrancy. Merlot has proven to be an ideal grape variety in this zone: the heavy, clay-rich soils give it substance, the Mediterranean climate provides the ripeness.

In the glass, Cont'Ugo shows dark cherry, plum, and a hint of lavender, underscored by cocoa and a touch of tobacco on the finish. The body is medium to full-bodied, the tannins soft and well-integrated, the acidity fresh enough to keep the wine lively. Not a heavyweight, but not a light everyday drop either.

Good with pasta al ragù, grilled lamb chop, or an aged Pecorino. Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. If you want to decant it, feel free to give it 30 minutes — this noticeably opens up the fruit.

Guado al Tasso

Super Tuscans – a style that changed the wine world. What began with Mario Incisa della Rocchetta's private Cabernet cultivation was perfected by his nephew Piero Antinori and oenologist Giacomo Tachis: the world-famous Sassicaia. Shortly thereafter followed Tignanello – Sangiovese without any white wine content.

Because the laws only allowed them to be classified as "table wine," prices rose to astronomical levels. Today, Sassicaia, Tignanello, Masseto, and Ornellaia are among the icons. What they have in common: structure, full-bodiedness, and the courage to innovate.
