Betz Family Winery The Untold Story
The Untold Story is the red wine Bob Betz made for moments when a single glass isn't enough. Powerful, yet poised—a wine that deserves time.
Bob Betz founded Betz Family Winery in 2003 in the Walla Walla Valley, Washington State, after 25 years as winemaker at Stimson Lane. He is one of the few American winemakers to hold the MW (Master of Wine) title. The winery works with small parcels in the best AVAs of the Columbia Valley and vinifies exclusively Bordeaux and Rhône grape varieties. Production volumes are deliberately kept small.
In the glass, it displays a deep ruby red with a violet rim. The nose is dominated by dark blackberry, plum, and cassis , underpinned by a hint of cedar and dried herbs. On the palate, a firm, ripe tannin structure carries the fruit, while the acidity remains present without being harsh. The finish is long and lingering—cassis, a touch of black olive, and clove.
Serving temperature: 17–18 °C. Drinking window: now until approximately 2030; it shows its best side with one to two hours of decanting.
- Grilled rib or leg of lamb with rosemary
- Mature Cheddar or Manchego
- Braised beef with dark jus
