Alión
The Alión 2022 shows what Ribera del Duero can do in a good vintage: dense fruit, lively structure, and wood that fits in instead of dominating.
Bodegas Alión belongs to the Vega-Sicilia group and was founded in 1991 – with the goal of developing a modern Ribera style that combines power with freshness. The Tempranillo grapes come from selected vineyards around Peñafiel, on calcareous-clay soils at around 800 meters altitude. The continental temperature fluctuations ensure slow ripening and aroma concentration.
In the glass, the 2022 shows blackberry, dark cherry, and a hint of lavender. After brief aeration, cedar wood and a fine smoky note are added. On the palate, it appears dense but not heavy – the tannins are velvety, the acidity keeps the wine lively, the finish long and spicy.
Drinking temperature: 16–18 °C. Goes well with lamb rack with herb crust, Ibérico pork, or a strong Manchego. Those who open it young should decant it an hour beforehand.
