Wynn's Coonawarra Estate Coonawarra Chardonnay

Coonawarra is primarily known for Cabernet — but the region can also do white Burgundy. This Chardonnay from Wynns shows what cool evening temperatures and the characteristic Terra Rossa over red limestone can bring out of a classic grape variety.

Wynns Coonawarra Estate is one of the oldest and most famous wineries in the region — founded in 1891, today part of the Penfolds parent company Treasury Wine Estates, but it has retained its own character. The Chardonnay grapes grow on the narrow strip of red clay to which Coonawarra owes its reputation.

In the glass, it is a fresh, medium-bodied white wine: stewed pear, white peach, and a hint of citrus zest. Partial aging in French oak gives the palate some richness and creaminess without overpowering the fruit. Acidity and weight are well-balanced, and the finish is medium-long and pleasantly fresh.
