The Barón de Ley Gran Reserva from Rioja leads the way. It matures for 24 months in French and American oak barrels and then spends more than five years in the bottle. The result is silky tannins, aromatic depth, and a long, warm finish. Robert Parker awarded it 91 points.
The Château Maucoil Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge provides a powerful counterpoint. The winery is located north of Orange in the heart of the appellation, on the typical galets roulés. These limestone pebbles store heat during the day and release it at night. In the glass, you will find dark fruit and the spicy garrigue profile of the southern Rhône Valley, supported by a powerful structure.
To finish, there is the La Croix de Montlabert Saint-Émilion Grand Cru from Château Montlabert, the estate's second wine made from Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It has aromas of ripe plums and hazelnuts, accompanied by fine nuances of cassis. On the palate, it is juicy, the spicy tannins are well-integrated, and the finish is long.
Pairs well with: Leg of lamb or Ibérico cold cuts for the Rioja, braised beef cheeks or game for the Châteauneuf-du-Pape, entrecôte or aged hard cheese for the Saint-Émilion. All three also pair beautifully with aged Manchego.
