The wines of Vergelegen bear the signature of André van Rensburg, arguably South Africa's most controversial winemaker. Not because of the quality of his wines, but rather because of his pronouncements, which often leave no room for dissenting opinions. Here is an artist at work, a perfectionist. And so his wines are characterized by finesse and structure, paired with fruit and approachability – in short, "The Third Way." They are characterful wines whose qualities are often unmatched or, indeed, "vergelegen" – remote. This single-varietal Vergelegen Chardonnay presents itself in the glass with a pale green-gold color. It reveals slightly smoky notes as well as intense aromas of lemons and ripe fruits and impresses with its skillful balance between elegant fruit and well-integrated oak. The Vergelegen wine estate is located on the South African coast of False Bay, less than an hour from Cape Town. Founded in 1700 by Adriann van der Stell, it is now owned by André van Rensburg. The estate's vines grow at altitudes between 140 and 310 meters, in clay soils. Clay soils are particularly well-suited for vine growth due to their water retention capacity. The climate in this region is characterized by mild temperatures thanks to its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. The Vergelegen wine estate cultivates grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, and Chardonnay for its wines.
