Stahl »Sonnenstuhl« Silvaner 0.75L

The »Sonnenstuhl« from Christian Stahl shows what Franconian Silvaner can do when it comes from a good site: substantial, dry, with a down-to-earth straightforwardness that has distinguished this Franconian wine for centuries.

Christian Stahl cultivates his vineyards in Franconia, one of the northernmost wine regions in Germany with shell limestone and colored sandstone as defining soil types — ideal for Silvaner, which develops more depth here than elsewhere. The »Sonnenstuhl« bears the name of a single vineyard and stands for the heart of the operation.

In the glass, it shows a clear, golden-yellow color. On the nose, ripe mirabelle and peach, plus a light hint of pepper and a spicy herbal note. On the palate, dry and taut, with a fresh acidity that keeps the wine lively, and a pleasantly long, mineral finish.

Pairs well with goat cheese, fried asparagus, Mediterranean vegetables, or a classic Franconian roast pork. Drinking temperature: 10–12 °C.

Christian Stahl

Christian Stahl is not as bad as his name might suggest. He wants nothing to do with Franconian winemaker folklore – he thinks "out of the box". When he took over his parents' business in Auernhofen, he made a name for himself not only in the wine sector but also in marketing.

His basic line "Nachschlag" shows a perfect balance between fun and craftsmanship. Noble wines with structure and tension – the result of 1,000 hours of manual labor. In 2018, the FAZ named him "Winemaker of the Year".

On 30 hectares in the Tauber Valley, characterized by shell limestone and gypsum keuper, wines grow with minerality and a pinch of saltiness. Modern, idiosyncratic, Franconian – at the highest level.
