Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Spätlese

The late harvest from Scharzhofberg is not an entry-level wine — it is a lesson in Saar-Riesling: firm acidity, restrained residual sweetness, mineral depth.

Egon Müller has cultivated the Scharzhofberg vineyard since 1797, a family estate. The steep slopes above Wiltingen grow on weathered Devonian slate, which retains heat and simultaneously contributes to the cool, austere style that distinguishes the Saar from the Mosel. Fermentation and aging take place traditionally in old wooden barrels—no stainless steel tanks, no technical intervention.

In the glass, it displays a bright golden yellow. The nose offers fresh lemon zest, ripe mirabelle plum, and a distinct slate note in the background. On the palate, the typical interplay of sweetness and acidity unfolds: the residual sweetness is present but immediately balanced by a lively, almost salty acidity—this makes the wine light and precise despite the residual sweetness. The finish is long, cool, and mineral.

  • Food pairings: Fried perch, sushi, goat cheese or spicy blue cheese
  • Serving temperature: 8–10 °C
  • Drinking window: Now until 2038 — with aging, the minerality gains further definition.
