Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Cabinet
From the most famous Riesling single vineyard in the world: The Scharzhofberger Kabinett by Egon Müller is a wine that shows astonishing depth despite its lightness.
The Egon Müller winery has been managing the Scharzhof on the Saar since 1797 – one of the coolest and most demanding sites in Germany. The Scharzhofberg, a steeply sloping south-facing hillside above the village of Wiltingen, is considered a benchmark for German Riesling: Devonian slate, extreme temperature fluctuations between day and night, minimal yields.
On the nose, candied orange, some bergamot, and a fine mineral undertone. On the palate, juicy and compact: candied citrus fruit, spice, a lively fruit sweetness that is kept in balance by the cool Saar acidity. The body is fine and athletic – not a heavy wine, but one with backbone and drive. The finish is long, spicy-fruity with a hint of slate.
Best served at 8–10 °C. Pairs with Asian cuisine with mild spice, crayfish, zander, or as an accompaniment to a spicy goat cheese.
