Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Selection
There are wines one can write about, and wines for which words are almost insufficient. Egon Müller 's Scharzhofberger Riesling Auslese belongs to the latter category. The Scharzhof winery in Wiltingen on the Saar is the only German member of the "Primum Familiae Vini"—an association that otherwise includes names like Antinori, Vega Sicilia, and Rothschild. This is no coincidence.
The Scharzhofberg vineyard is one of Germany's largest sites – 28 hectares of pure black slate, steep southern exposure, cool Saar nights. Only in the best years is a selection produced: selectively harvested, sometimes botrytized berries, fermented in traditional Moselle casks, aged on the fine lees for months – without haste, without intervention.
In the glass, a luminous golden yellow. The nose: candied orange peel, quince, passion fruit, and clear honey – ethereal, as one wine merchant once described it. On the palate, a sweetness that never becomes heavy, supported by an acidity that keeps everything in balance – and a finish that simply lingers.
Served at 8–10 °C with an alcohol content of 8.5–9.0% ABV, with aging potential well beyond 2040. No food pairing is needed – this wine is the experience.
