Riesling Kastanienbusch GG
The Kastanienbusch is one of the great sites of the Palatinate – and Dr. Wehrheim's Riesling GG shows why: clear, mineral, with a precision that is typical for this sandstone-buntsandstein soil.
The Dr. Wehrheim winery in Birkweiler has been cultivating steep slopes in the southern Palatinate Forest for generations. The Kastanienbusch – officially classified as a VDP First Growth – lies on deep Buntsandstein and gives the wines their characteristic spice and minerality. Vinification in steel tanks, long aging on the lees for texture without wood influence.
In the glass, a fragrant interplay of citrus zest, white peach, and a delicate herbal tone appears – peppermint, perhaps some verbena. On the palate, rather lean than opulent: finely juicy texture, a slight melt that asserts itself against the clear, calm acidity. The minerality runs as a fine thread through to the long, dry finish.
Serving recommendation: Ready to drink now with some air. Temperature: 10–12 °C. Pairs well with pan-fried zander with caper butter, matured goat cheese, or a classic tarte flambée with crème fraîche.
