Riesling Kastanienbusch GG
The Kastanienbusch vineyard is one of the great sites of the Palatinate – and Dr. Wehrheim's Riesling GG shows why: clear, mineral, with a precision that is typical for this sandstone-variegated sandstone soil.
The Dr. Wehrheim winery in Birkweiler has been cultivating steep slopes in the southern Palatinate Forest for generations. The Kastanienbusch vineyard – officially classified as a VDP Erste Lage (Premier Cru) site – lies on deep, variegated sandstone, giving the wines their characteristic spiciness and minerality. Vinification takes place in stainless steel tanks, with extended lees aging to achieve texture without oak influence.
In the glass, a fragrant interplay of citrus peel, white peach, and a delicate herbal note—peppermint, perhaps a touch of verbena—is revealed. On the palate, it is more lean than opulent: a finely juicy texture, a light, creamy quality that holds its own against the clear, calm acidity. The minerality runs like a fine thread through to the long, dry finish.
Serving suggestion: Ready to drink now with a little aeration; drinking window until approximately 2030. Temperature: 10–12 °C. Pairs well with pan-fried pike-perch with caper butter, mature goat cheese, or a classic tarte flambée with crème fraîche.
