Pettenthal Riesling GG QW Rheinhessen 0.75L

The Pettenthal is one of the great Riesling sites of Rheinhessen — a steep slope above the Rhine near Nierstein, whose red slate (Rotliegendes) gives the wine an unmistakable mineral depth. Kühling-Gillot cultivates the site biodynamically and is one of the wineries that have established Rheinhessen as a serious Riesling address in recent years.

In the glass, a Riesling appears that consciously holds back fruit: peach pit, lemon zest, and a hint of grapefruit zest — tart, precise, without sweetness. Added to this is the saltiness typical of Rotliegend sites and an acid structure that makes the wine appear lean and long. Not a flatterer, but a wine with attitude.

Best served between 10 and 12 °C. Pairs well with turbot with beurre blanc, zander on leeks, or a ripe mountain cheese. Those who have patience will be rewarded with more complexity.

The Winery

Weingut Kühling-Gillot

VDP Member Estate

The winery of Carolin and Oliver Battenfeld is located on the Rhine terrace. What is special about Kühling-Gillot is the ecological method of cultivation, which has been expanded by bio-dynamics since 2005. For Carolin and Oliver Battenfeld, the hare embodies the symbol of fertility and joie de vivre.

In recent years, the winery has developed into one of the absolute top businesses in Germany. The slate base of the famous Roter Hang around Nierstein and Nackenheim creates wines that, with their mixture of fine fruit and vibrant minerality, represent something like the ideal type of a great dry wine.
