Monzingen HALENBERG Riesling dry GG 1.5L

The Halenberg in Monzingen is considered one of the great Riesling sites of the Nahe valley – and Schäfer-Fröhlich shows why in this magnum bottling. A wine that needs time and gives time.

Tim Fröhlich has been managing the winery in Bockenau for over two decades with a consistent focus on steep-slope Rieslings from slate and volcanic rock. The Halenberg – deep grey slate, partly over 200 million years old – provides grapes with extraordinary mineral tension. Spontaneous fermentation, aging in wooden barrels, long lees aging. The 1.5-liter bottle further slows down the maturation: those who open it now will encounter the wine in an early phase.

On the nose, light quince, citrus zest, and a distinctly stony, almost chalky mineral tone. On the palate, taut, lively acidity that carries the body without cutting. Added to this are salty, herbal nuances, a hint of aloe, and a long, firm finish with real grip. Not a crowd-pleasing wine – one with backbone.

Serving recommendation: Serving temperature 11–13 °C. Pairs well with cod on lentils, goat cheese with herbs, or fried monkfish with caper butter. Those who wait will be rewarded with increasing complexity.

The Schäfer-Fröhlich winery's portfolio comprises an impressive selection of wines that reflect the diversity and quality of the Nahe region. The Rieslings, in particular, are the winery's hallmark and are known for their elegance, freshness, and longevity. In addition, the winery also produces excellent Burgundy wines as well as other varieties that perfectly express the terroir and the winemaker's skill. At Schäfer-Fröhlich, quality is paramount. The winery relies on meticulous handwork in the vineyard and gentle processing of the grapes in the cellar to unlock the full potential of the wines.
