The Cielo sul Vulcano Vigne Vecchie Aglianico del Vulture DOC

Aglianico del Vulture is one of the great red wines of Southern Italy — and the Vigne Vecchie bottling from Il Cielo shows why: old vines at the foot of the Vulture volcano, soils of volcanic rock, nine months of aging in small wooden barrels.

The Vulture is located in Basilicata, one of the most remote regions of Italy. The extinct volcanic peak provides mineral-rich soils and cool nights — both decisively shape the character of the Aglianico. Old vines with deep root systems reinforce this minerality and deliver concentrated, small berries.

In the glass, a deep ruby red with violet reflections. On the nose, blackberry, black cherry, and plum, plus licorice, verbena, and a hint of smoke — typical for volcanic soil. On the palate, dense and structured: powerful but ripe tannins, lively acidity, long spicy finish with notes of dark chocolate and tobacco.

Serving temperature: 16–18 °C. Decanting for two hours is worthwhile.
Pairs well with braised lamb, wild boar ragù, Pecorino stagionato, or a hearty lentil stew with guanciale.
