ECK Spätburgunder GG VDP. Grosses Gewächs from the Ahr 0.75L

The ECK Spätburgunder Großes Gewächs from the Deutzerhof winery comes from the westernmost single vineyard of the Ahr valley — one of the most extreme and at the same time most exciting addresses for German Spätburgunder.

The vines at the ECK site stand on their own roots on slate and carry the historical "Kaastenholz" clone — an Ahr valley specialty that stands for particular depth and structure in the glass. The Deutzerhof winery is one of the defining businesses of the Ahr and works consistently site-oriented. The VDP-Großes-Gewächs predicate stands for the highest classification level of the association: dry vinification, strict selection, origin expression in the foreground.

In the glass, it shows what slate Spätburgunder from the Ahr is all about: dark cherry, raspberry confit, a hint of graphite, and spicy earth notes in the background. Fine, ripe tannins, lively acidity, long finish. A wine that combines drinking pleasure and complexity.

Best served at 16–17 °C. Pairs well with venison fillet with chanterelles, duck breast, or aged goat cheese.
