Dönnhoff Kreuznacher Kahlenberg 1st location

The Kahlenberg is one of the best vineyard sites in Bad Kreuznach — a south-facing slope on quartzite and Rotliegend weathered soils, which gives the Riesling a completely different character than the slate-dominated Nahe further downstream.

Dönnhoff, for generations one of the most reliable wineries in the Nahe region, ferments and matures this wine in large wooden barrels and stainless steel tanks. No new barriques, no oak influence—instead, slow oxidation gives the wine structure without masking its origin.

In the glass, ripe yellow quince, white peach, and a hint of brioche are revealed, underpinned by the mineral spiciness of the Rotliegend soil—slightly chalky, slightly smoky. The body is full, the acidity ripe and integrated, the finish long and dry with a subtle salty note.

Serving suggestion: Serve at 10–12 °C. Veal medallions with morels, pike-perch fillet on beurre blanc, or a mature Munster cheese pair well. Drinking window 2025–2032 — the wine still has room to improve.
