Château de Durette Morgon Homage

Morgon is the meatiest of the ten Beaujolais crus — and the homage from Château de Durette shows why this appellation develops its own aging potential that makes many Burgundies look old.

Château de Durette lies in the heart of Morgon, where the vines grow on the characteristic weathered volcanic rock (known as roche pourrie ) of Mont du Py. This soil imparts a density and mineral tension to the Gamay, clearly distinct from the light Beaujolais cliché. The Hommage is the cuvée with which the winery captures the unique character of this site in the bottle.

In the glass, a deep ruby red. On the nose, dark cherry, blueberry, and a distinct note of licorice, with hints of violet and earth underneath. On the palate, medium to full-bodied, with velvety tannins and no harshness, and lively acidity that gives the wine drive. The finish is long and spicy, with a lingering interplay of fruit and minerality. Decanter awarded the 2015 vintage 90 points.

Serving temperature: 15–17 °C. Drinking window: now until 2028. Pairs well with braised lamb, duck breast with cherries, or a robust Epoisses.
