In 1772, Philippe Clicquot founded a wine trade under the Clicquot brand. In 1805, Francois Clicquot, the son of the company founder, died.

His 27-year-old widow (French: Veuve) Barbe-Nicole Clicquot-Ponsardin then took over the business of her late husband. While Europe was struggling to recover from the Napoleonic Wars, she managed to export her champagne to the whole world thanks to the active support of her employees, most of whom came from Germany. She introduced her products at all the royal courts of Europe and thus contributed to the radiance of the French savoir-vivre. After a short time, her wine was no longer just a successful product, but a veritable myth. Barbe-Nicole Clicquot was a passionate entrepreneur. She corresponded with her traveling salesmen, especially with Ludwig “Louis” Bohne, the closest confidant of her late husband; she inspected her wine cellars herself at night to watch over the development of the cuvée. Her cellar master Anton von Müller, French Antoine de Muller, a native of Swabia, invented the riddling process around 1813.
