The Valais is the most important wine region in Switzerland and is located deep in the Alps – a valley that counts more hours of sunshine than many more southern areas. It is precisely this combination of altitude, warmth, and barren soils that shapes the wines here in an unmistakable way.
Fendant and Dôle – the two faces of the Valais
The two most famous Valais wine types could hardly be more different. Fendant, made from the Chasselas grape, is a dry white wine with a light, fresh style – uncomplicated, with a hint of minerality, and a classic companion to Swiss cuisine, whether cheese fondue or raclette. Dôle, on the other hand, is a red blend that is traditionally based on Pinot Noir and Gamay. It is soft, accessible, and pleasantly uncomplicated – a red wine that requires no great preparation.
