In the heart of Chamoson since 1971
Cave St-Pierre is based in Chamoson, the most important wine-growing municipality in the canton of Valais, not far from the historic hamlet of St-Pierre-de-Clages. The winery was founded in 1971 — from the beginning with the ambition to capture the grape varieties and the terroir of the Central Valais in bottles that attract attention beyond the cantonal borders. Today, Emmanuel Carron leads the house, supported by oenologist Thierry Ciampi. The fact that Cave St-Pierre was named Swiss Winery of the Year in 2020 is the most visible sign of a development that has been consistently geared towards quality for decades. The vineyards are nestled in a huge rocky basin, flanked by mountain peaks that protect the vines from wind and cold, flooded by the Valais sun — a landscape that shapes the character of the wines from the ground up.
Loyal vintners, quality viticulture, modern cellar
The business model of Cave St-Pierre is based on a long-term partnership with around three hundred grape suppliers from the region. Many of these vintner families have been working with the winery since the beginning — a continuity that is not a marketing promise, but the basis for reliable raw material quality. The suppliers have bindingly committed themselves to quality viticulture: quality is created first in the vineyard, not in the cellar. Thierry Ciampi then translates this basis into wines with distinct varietal and terroir typicity. Modern cellar technology and traditional craftsmanship interlock — the cellar is equipped in such a way that both poles do not work against each other, but complement each other. The terroir of Chamoson, known for its clay slate and limestone, gives the white wines their mineral contour and the red wines their earthy depth.
Valais grape varieties in three lines
The assortment of Cave St-Pierre is divided into clearly defined lines. In the Vinoscout shop, you will find wines from the Alpes line — including the Fendant du Valais, the autochthonous Chasselas, which develops a lively acid structure and an independent minerality on alpine soil, as well as the Dôle du Valais, the classic Valais red wine cuvée made from Pinot Noir and Gamay. The Réserve des Administrateurs marks the upper level of the house: here, great Valais classics such as Fendant, Petite Arvine, Humagne Rouge, and Cornalin show what the Chamoson terroir can achieve in its most concentrated form — typicity of the site combined with a pleasing precision in aging. In addition, Cave St-Pierre maintains the connection to the history of the Valais: the Maurice Gay line commemorates the traditional winery founded in 1883, with which the house is historically linked. In addition to the well-known varieties, the cellar also contains Heida (Savagnin blanc), Syrah, and Cornalin — a commitment to a Valais that is more than Fendant and Dôle.
