Jean Leon –
Penedès wines with a history since 1964
Jean Leon founded his winery northeast of Barcelona in 1964 – at a time when the Penedès region played a negligible role internationally. Today, the estate cultivates 70 hectares of vineyards, divided into seven single vineyards, including Vinya La Scala, Vinya Le Havre, and Vinya Palau. All vineyards face south and benefit from long hours of sunshine, which allow the Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Chardonnay grapes to ripen slowly and evenly.
The winery is now run by Mireia Torres , who respects her predecessor's vision while consistently developing it further. Winemaker Jaume Rovira employs modern cellar technology: the wines undergo controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks before aging in French and American oak barrels – for varying lengths of time depending on the grape variety and style. The result is wines that reflect the warmth of the Penedès region without sacrificing freshness.
What sets Jean Leon apart from many Spanish estates is its early decision to cultivate international grape varieties in a region then dominated by Cava and indigenous grapes. This pioneering spirit is still evident today – in the structure of the wines, in the meticulous selection of vineyard sites, and in a style that combines maturity and approachability.
