Hedges Family Estate
Hedges Family Estate —
biodynamic viticulture on Red Mountain
Hedges Family Estate is located on Red Mountain in eastern Washington State—one of North America's smallest and most concentrated AVAs. Basalt-rich soils, warm days, and cool nights produce red wines with intense fruit and a crisp freshness. The Hedges family has been cultivating wine here since the early 1990s, now in its second generation.
The winery is certified according to both Demeter (biodynamic) and CCOF (organic) standards—not as a marketing tool, but as a consequence of a philosophy that views the vineyard as a closed ecosystem. Composting, herbal sprays, and the avoidance of synthetic substances: these practices shape the rhythm of the year on the estate.
In the glass, the wines reveal what makes Red Mountain special: Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with depth and structure, but without the heaviness that warmer vineyard sites sometimes bring. Long finish, clear origin. Good with grilled lamb loin, braised dishes, or a mature hard cheese.
