CVNE was founded in Haro in 1879 by the Real de Asúa brothers and is now in its fifth generation of family ownership. With over 1,000 hectares of its own vineyards, the company is the largest private vineyard owner in Spain – a rarity in a region that otherwise relies heavily on purchased grapes.

Behind the name are three independent bodegas: the historic CVNE with its Eiffel-designed cellar in Haro, the Viña Real with its striking architecture in Rioja Alavesa, and Contino – Rioja's first château concept, a single vineyard with its own vinification, long before this was common practice in Spain. Each bodega has its own style, its own location, its own craft.

The estate's most famous wine, the Imperial Gran Reserva 2004, was the first Spanish wine ever to be named Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year. The more accessible CUNE line – originating from a typo in 1879 – demonstrates that classic Rioja quality doesn't necessarily require a large budget.
