At the end of the 1980s, the Rotllant Daurella family moved to the Rioja Alta – not to build another Rioja, but to understand what old Tempranillo vines can really achieve. The winery is located high above the station district of Haro, in the middle of one of Spain's most historically dense wine-growing areas, surrounded by bodegas that have been setting standards since the 19th century.
The philosophy of Bodegas Roda is consistent: low yields, selective hand-harvesting, gentle vinification. No two vintages are the same, and that is intentional. The wines reflect the respective year without losing recognizability. SELA shows the accessible, fruit-forward character of the house; RODA brings red fruit with structural depth; RODA I stands for darker power and remarkable freshness despite maturity. Finally, CIRSION – from the oldest plots – is intended for moments when a wine really has something to say.
What distinguishes Roda from many neighbors: the winery thinks in long timeframes. Investments in the vineyard, in research into the clonal selection of old Tempranillo biotypes, in cellar technology without compromise. The result is wines that are accessible young, but can easily carry a decade or more.
