Cloudy Bay – the wine that made New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc world-famous. Founded in 1985 by David Hohnen, it is named after the stretch of coastline that James Cook christened "Cloudy Bay" in 1770. The first vintage caused a sensation in the 1980s. British wine critic Oz Clarke called it "probably the best Sauvignon Blanc in the world." Today, Cloudy Bay belongs to LVMH, but it remains what it has always been: an icon of clear, powerful, and distinctive New Zealand wine.

Cloudy Bay represents the moment when New Zealand wine ceased to be a footnote. David Hohnen founded the winery in 1985 in the Marlborough Valley on New Zealand's South Island – named after the bay that James Cook charted in 1770. The first vintage of their Sauvignon Blanc was an immediate success: wine critic Oz Clarke described it as one of the best Sauvignon Blancs he had ever tasted.

What makes Marlborough so characteristic of this style is the interplay of intense sunshine, cool nights, and the well-drained gravel soils of the Wairau Valley. The result is wines with a clear structure, vibrant acidity, and the typical aromas of gooseberry, citrus grass, and a mineral note reminiscent of the nearby coast. In addition to Sauvignon Blanc, Cloudy Bay also produces a Chardonnay and a Pinot Noir, both sharing the same commitment to precision.

Today, Cloudy Bay is part of the LVMH portfolio, but this hasn't changed the character of the wines. They pair well with seafood, grilled fish, or a mature goat cheese – and work just as well as an aperitif if the evening is still open.
