Château d'Esclans – a castle winery in a state of suspended animation until Sacha Lichine arrived in 2006. The son of Bordeaux legend Alexis Lichine had grand ambitions: to produce the best rosés in the world. With oenologist Patrick Léon at his side, he focused on 80-year-old Grenache vines, calcareous and clay soils, and state-of-the-art cellar technology. The result? Rosé on a new level. Provence as it can be – powerful, elegant, and unmistakable.

Château d'Esclans lay dormant for decades until Sacha Lichine – son of Bordeaux legend Alexis Lichine – took over the estate in 2006. His goal was clear: to elevate rosé to a level previously unseen in Provence. At his side: star oenologist Patrick Léon, who had previously shaped Mouton Rothschild.

The foundation is provided by Grenache vines up to 80 years old, growing on calcareous and clay soils in the hinterland of Les Arcs-sur-Argens. The combination of old vines, mineral terroir, and precise cellar techniques – including controlled fermentation in small wooden barrels for the top cuvées – results in rosés with unusual depth and structure.

The range extends from the approachable Whispering Angel to the age-worthy Les Clans and Garrus. Anyone who thinks rosé is an unpretentious summer drink will be pleasantly surprised: these wines pair just as well with grilled sea bass as with a mature goat cheese from Provence.
