Vega Sicilia Unico

The Unico is the benchmark of Ribera del Duero — a wine that usually matures for over a decade in the cellar before it leaves the winery. The 2013 vintage came onto the market after almost ten years of barrel and bottle aging.

Vega Sicilia was founded in 1864 and is considered the oldest winery in Ribera del Duero. The flagship Unico is made from Tempranillo (Tinto Fino) with a portion of Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on limestone-clay soils at an altitude of around 750 meters. The years of maturation in various barrel sizes and vintages is the house philosophy — not a compromise, but a method.

In the glass, the 2013 shows a deep ruby color with a garnet rim. On the nose, black currant, blackberry, and blueberry, underneath cocoa, mocha, and a hint of incense. With air, sage, thyme, and gingerbread are added. On the palate, full-bodied, the tannins velvety and firm at the same time, the acidity structure fresh and precise. The finish is long, spicy, with persistent fruit.

Decanting recommended (at least two hours). Serving temperature 17–18 °C. Pairs with rack of lamb with a herb crust, braised beef shoulder, or aged Manchego.
