Montaraz Unico Monastrell

Montaraz Unico Monastrell
Monastrell from the source: Murcia's best-known grape variety shows here what it can do when it grows on barren soils in the Spanish interior and is vinified by experienced hands.
Bodegas Hijos de Juan Gil is one of the leading addresses in the Murcia region. The Gil family has been working with Monastrell for generations – a grape variety that withstands extreme heat and responds with concentrated, dark-fruited wines. The Montaraz Unico is their accessible entry into the range: four months of aging in oak barrels, which give the wine structure without overpowering it.
In the glass, it glows in a rich ruby red. The nose shows black cherry, blackberry and a hint of vanilla, plus a mineral depth that is reminiscent of dry slate. Velvety on the palate, with pleasant fullness and well-integrated tannins. The finish is warm and medium-long – typical Monastrell, without appearing heavy.
- Food recommendation: Leg of lamb with herbs, grilled beef steak, Manchego or spicy chorizo
- Drinking temperature: 16–18 °C

Bodegas Hijos de Juan Gil embodies what makes good wine: honest work, respect for nature, and a deep connection to the land. Behind the name is a family that trusts its vineyards – and gives them the time they need. Their roots lie in Jumilla, one of Spain's hottest and driest wine regions. Here, old Monastrell vines fight for every drop of water – and that's precisely what makes them so special. What ripens under the sun arrives in the glass with full force: dark berries, a hint of earth, warmth without heaviness. The wines of the Juan Gil family are surprising: powerful, but not clumsy – with a depth you only truly notice on the second sip. No showy effects, no embellishment. Simply wine that lives up to its name.
