Lisa Bunn Nierstein Riesling from the Rotliegend

Red slope, old vines, stony depth: This Riesling shows what the famous Rotliegend soil in Nierstein can do — not a fruit basket, but spice and minerality.

Lisa Bunn cultivates steep slopes in three top Nierstein vineyards: Oelberg, Hipping, and Schloss Schwabsburg . The 30-year-old vines dig their roots deep into the characteristic red clay-sandstone, which gives the wine its distinctive salinity. Harvesting is done exclusively by hand, selectively.

In the glass, the Riesling displays an unusually herbaceous profile: thyme, basil, mint —underpinned by a clear arc of acidity. On the palate, it is taut yet balanced, with a long, salty-spicy finish that clearly reveals its Rotliegend character. The 2023 vintage received 93 points from James Suckling.

Lisa Bunn Winery

In 2011, Lisa Bunn and Bastian Strebel dared to do something special in Nierstein: establish a winery from the ground up – with a clear vision. Their Rieslings grow on the Roter Hang (Red Slope), on deep red slate. The Pinot Noirs come from the limestone-rich vineyards of Wintersheim. In the cellar, they work naturally: spontaneous fermentation, extended maceration, aging in wooden barrels, and patient lees contact. Organic farming on 18 hectares – not just a concept, but a way of life. The result: wines that feel vibrant, complex, and full of character. Wines that have a story to tell.
