Lampante Montefalco Rosso DOC Riserva
The Lampante Montefalco Rosso DOC Riserva from Tenuta Castelbuono shows what Umbria can do in its best locations: depth without heaviness, structure without harshness.
Tenuta Castelbuono lies in the heart of the Montefalco DOC in Umbria—one of central Italy's most exciting red wine regions, renowned for its local Sagrantino grape. The Montefalco Rosso is its more approachable sibling: typically a blend of Sangiovese and Sagrantino, showcasing the region's power in a more elegant style. It undergoes 18 months of aging in large oak casks (not small barriques), followed by 12 months of bottle aging—a total of 2.5 years—before release.
On the nose, dried violets, preserved cherry, and a hint of sweet spices—cinnamon, clove. On the palate, dense but well-integrated tannins, which have already gained a smooth texture from the long aging period. The finish is long, slightly spicy, with a touch of dark plum.
- Dishes: Oven-baked lamb, wild boar salami, pecorino stagionato or pasta al ragù di cinghiale
- Temperature: 16–18 °C, decanting recommended (30 min.)
- Drinking window: now until 2030
Tenuta Castelbuono is located in the heart of Umbria – a landscape that must be seen at least once: rolling hills, ancient olive groves, and in the middle of it all, a winery owned by the Lunelli family, which remarkably combines tradition and modern ambition.
Here, around the medieval Carapace Tower – designed by sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro – grows Sagrantino , the distinctive soul of this region. The Lunellis give it the time it needs. The result: wines with depth, structure, and a long finish that lingers long after the last sip.
