Carapace Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG

Carapace Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG
Carapace Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG is a powerful, dry red wine from the Montefalco region in Umbria, Italy. It is made exclusively from the indigenous Sagrantino grape variety, known for its concentrated, tannic, and age-worthy wines.
In the glass, the wine displays an intense, dark red to almost black color with violet reflections. The nose is dense and complex, with aromas of blackberries, blueberries, cherry, jam, licorice, chocolate, coffee, light herbs such as rosemary, and a hint of vanilla and toasty notes from the oak aging. On the palate, Carapace is structured and concentrated, with firm yet finely textured tannins, crisp acidity, and a long, intense finish that evokes dark fruit, spice, and a touch of bitter almond.
The wine typically matures for around 20–24 months in large wooden barrels, which gives it depth and maturity without diluting the characteristic power of the Sagrantino grape. The alcohol content is usually around 14–15% ABV; Carapace is ideally served at 16–18 °C, slightly decanted to best develop its aromas.
It pairs perfectly with robust, spiced dishes such as beef or lamb goulash, game, braised dishes, or aged cheeses. Thanks to its solid structure and varietal-typical longevity, Carapace Montefalco Sagrantino DOCG is also suitable for extended aging and develops even more nuances over the years.
Tenuta Castelbuono is located in the heart of Umbria – a landscape that must be seen at least once: rolling hills, ancient olive groves, and in the middle of it all, a winery owned by the Lunelli family, which remarkably combines tradition and modern ambition.
Here, around the medieval Carapace Tower – designed by sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro – grows Sagrantino , the distinctive soul of this region. The Lunellis give it the time it needs. The result: wines with depth, structure, and a long finish that lingers long after the last sip.
