Canonkop Pinotage
Kanonkop is considered the Pinotage address of South Africa — anyone who wants to understand what this grape variety can achieve cannot overlook this winery in Stellenbosch.
The estate is located at the foot of the Simonsberg mountains, on well-drained, deep soils that give the Pinotage the necessary concentration without making it heavy. The Krige family has managed Kanonkop for generations with a clear focus on this South African cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsault. 16 months of aging in French Nevers and Vicard oak barriques significantly shape the style: wood as a frame, not as the protagonist.
In the glass, the wine shows a dark ruby red with a violet rim. On the nose, it opens with blackcurrant, blueberry, and raspberry, accompanied by a hint of dark chocolate, coffee, and fine roasted aromas from the barrel. On the palate, it presents itself as juicy and concentrated — the fruit melt is dense, the tannins soft and well-integrated, and the acidity gives the whole thing freshness and drive. The finish is long, spicy, with a slightly smoky note.
