Hugel Pinot Gris Estate

The Pinot Gris Estate from Hugel & Fils shows what Alsace can do with this grape variety: a full, round body, supported by subtle residual sweetness and a soft acidity structure.

Hugel is one of the most renowned names in Alsace – established in Riquewihr since 1639, and now run by the thirteenth generation. Their "Estate" Pinot Gris comes from their own vineyards surrounding the village, vinified in the classic Alsatian style with a focus on varietal purity and approachability.

In the glass, the wine presents aromas of yellow peach, beeswax, and a hint of ginger. The mouthfeel is creamy and pleasantly full-bodied, the acidity moderate – not a wine that boasts freshness, but rather depth and richness. The finish reveals a light spicy note, typical of a well-aged Pinot Gris from Alsace.

Hugel & Fils

Hugel & Fils – the soul of Alsace. Since 1639, this name has been inextricably linked to winemaking in Riquewihr. Today, Jean-Philippe, Etienne, and Marc Hugel run the family winery in its 13th generation – a global synonym for Alsatian wines. Their 30 hectares in and around Riquewihr comprise half of Grand Cru vineyards such as Schoenenbourg, with vines averaging 35 years old. Hugel consciously avoids Grand Cru labeling – their own quality standards are stricter. Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Noir develop unparalleled finesse here. A member of Primum Familiae Vini, recognized by Wine Spectator – and still a family business. Alsace as it should be.
